Hey, There!
I’m Earlene.
Earlene is a UNESCO-trained socio-cultural anthropologist, food futurist, and the founder of Kitchen Connection, a global platform that connects cooks, farmers, policymakers, and indigenous leaders from more than 150 countries to reimagine the future of food through cultural diplomacy. She grew up in a family of agriculturists and restaurateurs, giving her a firsthand understanding of both the farm and the table, and shaping her belief in food as a bridge between people, cultures, and ideas.
Her research focuses on how gastrodiplomacy can advance sustainability goals on Earth and in space. She has supported the preservation of traditional crops in Latin America, advised on climate-resilient school meal programs in Japan, and advocates for polar sustainability as an Antarctic Ambassador. She works with the United Nations, national governments, and global coalitions on food policy, trade, biodiversity, and innovative agriculture, and designs education programs that prepare young people to protect planetary health.
Earlene led the creation of the award-winning Cookbook in Support of the United Nations: For People and Planet, the first to pair every recipe with nutrition and carbon footprint data, which has been featured in The New York Times, UN News, and Food Tank. She co-authored How Does Food Grow?, an illustrated book introducing children to the food system.
A James Beard Foundation Scholar and adjunct professor at New York University, she teaches the history of agriculture, global food trade, and food innovation, from the Ice Age to space farming. Her early ethnographic work with the French Embassy in New York informed The Bilingual Revolution and was cited in Ethnic American Food Today. She served on the United Nations Department of Global Communications Youth Steering Committee for four years and continues to advise its successor, the UN Youth Office.
Having lived at sea through the Semester at Sea program and traveled to more than 115 countries, Earlene is as comfortable documenting fonio preservation in rural West Africa as she is moderating high-level United Nations panels. Across her work, she remains committed to ensuring that food connects rather than divides, building a future that is just, sustainable, and delicious.
